Orthopaedics: bones, joints and sports injuries

What orthopaedics treats

Orthopaedics and trauma surgery is the medical specialty that studies, diagnoses and treats diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system: bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage, in both the limbs and the spine.

At RincĂłn Salud we run an orthopaedics clinic in Torre del Mar and in MĂĄlaga city, within a multidisciplinary medical centre with direct access to our own radiology, lab tests and physiotherapy, allowing a quick diagnosis and coordinated treatment from the first visit. Our orthopaedic surgeons are specialist doctors trained through Spain's MIR programme in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery.

Common reasons for a consultation

  • Acute injuries: fractures, ankle and knee sprains, dislocations, ligament tears (such as the ACL) and muscle or tendon tears.
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, shoulder and spine, the most common joint disease from the age of 50 onwards.
  • Back pain: lumbar or cervical slipped disc, sciatica and spinal stenosis.
  • Chronic tendinitis and tendinopathies: rotator cuff, Achilles tendon, tennis elbow.
  • Sports injuries from running, padel, cycling or football: plantar fasciitis, shin splints, patellar chondropathy, meniscus injuries or pubalgia.
  • Osteoporosis and fragility fractures, with bone density assessment and fall prevention.

What to expect at your first consultation

The first visit follows a clear protocol: full medical history, a physical examination with mobility and strength tests and, where needed, diagnostic tests — digital X-ray at the centre itself and access to MRI and CT scans in coordination with partner centres. The aim is for you to leave with a clear diagnosis and a defined treatment plan.

Most musculoskeletal injuries are resolved without surgery: immobilisation, prescribed medication, injections (corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid or platelet-rich plasma) and guided rehabilitation alongside our Physiotherapyteam, part of the recovery plan from day one. And when knee, hip or back pain keeps coming back and the examination points to how you walk, a biomechanics study at podiatry completes the diagnosis.

When surgery is the best option, the team uses current techniques: knee, shoulder and hip arthroscopy, joint replacements, spine surgery and hand and wrist surgery (carpal tunnel, trigger finger).

When to book an appointment

It's best not to put off an injury: the sooner it's diagnosed and treated, the better the outlook usually is and the shorter the recovery. See us if you have joint pain that won't ease, a recent injury, reduced mobility or discomfort that keeps coming back when you play sport.

You can book an appointment with our orthopaedic surgeon at whichever centre suits you best.

Frequently asked questions

When should I see an orthopaedic surgeon urgently?

Seek urgent care if you have: an inability to put weight on your foot or move a limb after an injury, visible deformity in a bone or joint, very intense pain after a blow or a fall, or a sensation of a «crack» or «pop» in a joint during exercise. For injuries that are not life-threatening, our clinic offers a priority appointment within a few days.

Can the orthopaedic surgeon request an MRI scan for me?

Yes. The orthopaedic surgeon can request and assess MRI scans, CT scans and musculotendinous ultrasound scans. At RincĂłn Salud we handle the referral so that the process is as quick and convenient as possible.

What is the difference between an orthopaedic surgeon and a physiotherapist?

The orthopaedic surgeon is a medical specialist who diagnoses, prescribes treatment and operates if necessary. The physiotherapist carries out the rehabilitation treatment prescribed by the doctor. The two roles are complementary, and at RincĂłn Salud both are available in the same centre.

How much does a private orthopaedic appointment cost in MĂĄlaga?

The price of a first orthopaedic appointment at a private clinic in MĂĄlaga varies depending on the centre and the specialist. At RincĂłn Salud we work with clear prices and no surprises. Ask about our rates by calling 900 52 52 84.

Do you treat children and teenagers with injuries?

Yes. Injuries in young athletes — sprains, growth-plate fractures, patellar chondropathy — have their own particular features, and our orthopaedic surgeons are experienced in managing musculoskeletal conditions in children and adolescents.

Do you accept health insurance?

Ask us about the health insurance companies we work with. Many of our patients come with reimbursement policies and we guide them on how to arrange the claim.
