The family doctor: close and continuous care

The family doctor is a key point of contact for looking after your health. They assess the symptoms that concern you, know your medical history and support you over time, both to treat illnesses and to prevent them. Their work takes into account your background, habits and personal situation, alongside the specific reason for each consultation.

In our centres, we treat adults and young people, either privately or through medical insurance. Care combines the treatment of common health problems with the prevention and monitoring of chronic conditions.

How they can help you

  • Common health problems: assessment of respiratory infections, sore throats, urinary discomfort, digestive issues or muscle pain.
  • Chronic conditions: monitoring of blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, including review of treatment and its progress.
  • Prevention and health check-ups: guidance on healthy habits, check-ups and advice on adult vaccination based on your medical history and needs.
  • Interpretation of test results: explanation of your clinical laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests, taking into account your symptoms and medical history.
  • Medical certificates: health assessments and issuing certificates for relevant procedures.
  • Dressing changes and post-surgery follow-up: assessment of minor wounds and injuries, and support during recovery.

What the consultation involves

The appointment begins by listening to you: what is happening, for how long, and how it affects your daily life. The doctor reviews your medical history and current treatments, and carries out the necessary physical examination. Based on this information, they explain their assessment and the next steps, which may include treatment, diagnostic tests or a follow-up visit.

Continuity of care allows for a better understanding of your health, monitoring changes and checking how you respond to treatment. It also provides an opportunity to address questions and review recommendations as your needs change.

When you require specialist care, the family doctor coordinates referrals to specialists within the centre itself, such as Cardiology, Traumatology and Orthopaedics or Dermatology. Shared medical records ensure the specialist has the necessary information to continue your care.

When to see a doctor

You can book a consultation for symptoms that concern you, to monitor a chronic condition, review your treatment or ask questions about your health. The family doctor can also guide you if you are unsure whether you need to see a specialist.

Frequently asked questions

What are the functions of a family doctor?

They are the gateway to our healthcare system: our GP, as we used to say. They are the ones who know us and guide us, and who make referrals to other specialists.

Do I need an appointment to see the family doctor?

Yes, we recommend booking an appointment in advance to guarantee care without waiting, although we handle consultations promptly so we can see you as soon as possible.

How often should I have a general check-up?

At least once a year is recommended, even if there are no symptoms, to monitor vital signs and run preventive blood tests.

Can the family doctor refer me to a specialist in the same clinic?

Yes. One of the major advantages of Rincón Salud is internal coordination. Your family doctor can refer you directly to Cardiology, Podiatry or Physiotherapy if they consider it necessary.

Do you issue official medical certificates?

Yes, we carry out the assessments needed to issue various health certificates following a complete physical examination.

Do you deal with minor emergencies at the clinic?

We can see acute problems that need prompt assessment, such as infections, feeling generally unwell or one-off pain, always subject to immediate appointment availability.
