Mammography and Breast Unit

What is the Breast Unit

The Breast Unit at Rincón Salud is a multidisciplinary team dedicated to breast pathology. Its objective is to offer an early and precise diagnosis of breast conditions and, when necessary, comprehensive treatment within the same care pathway, without the patient having to coordinate multiple specialists on her own.

The unit's core test is the mammogram, the benchmark imaging study for the breast: it allows abnormalities to be detected before symptoms appear, which is precisely when the range of treatment options is greatest. It is complemented by breast ultrasound and, if the results require it, biopsy and histopathology examination.

What the unit includes

  • Diagnostic and follow-up mammograms.
  • High-definition breast ultrasounds, as a complementary test.
  • Biopsies with histopathology analysis when an imaging result requires confirmation.
  • Oncoplastic surgery, for cases requiring surgical treatment.
  • Psychological support, providing care throughout the diagnostic process and treatment.

The unit's imaging tests are supported by the centre's Radiology department. The Gynaecology department can request breast tests and refer patients to the Breast Unit, which evaluates and monitors breast pathology; both departments liaise with each other whenever required by the case.

Common reasons for consultation

  • Routine breast screening, following the schedule recommended by your doctor or gynaecologist.
  • Appearance of a lump or thickening in the breast or armpit.
  • Changes in the skin or nipple, retraction or discharge.
  • Persistent or localised breast pain.
  • Follow-up of a previous finding requiring imaging monitoring.
