Hunting and boating licence

Hunting and boating licence

Fitness certificates for a hunting licence and recreational boating qualifications: tests required by regulations, report issued same day.

Two different paperwork needs, one type of check-up

Both the hunting licence and recreational boating qualifications — PNB, PER, yacht skipper, navigation licence or jet ski — require proving minimum physical and mental fitness through a certificate issued at an authorised centre. The check-up is brief and done in a single visit.

What's examined

  • Vision: acuity, field of vision and, for boating, colour vision, which is essential for identifying lights and buoys.
  • Hearing.
  • Musculoskeletal system and balance.
  • Neurological and psychological status.
  • Psychotechnical tests of attention and coordination.

What to bring

Valid ID, your usual glasses or contact lenses, a hearing aid if you wear one, and reports for any relevant condition or treatment. If you're renewing, bring your previous qualification or licence.

The certificate

It's issued on the spot when the result is favourable, and in some cases submitted electronically to the relevant authority. Bear in mind its validity period: certificates expire, so it's best done when you're about to submit your application. If you also need your driving licence or a firearms licence, it can be done in the same visit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the medical examination the same for a hunting licence as for a boating licence?

It is the same type of psychophysical examination, with some nuances. In the boating field colour vision takes on special importance, as it is decisive for identifying lights and buoyage. In both cases vision, hearing, the locomotor system, neurological status and psychotechnical skills are assessed.

Do I take it away the same day?

Yes, when the result is favourable the certificate is issued on the spot, and in some cases it is filed electronically with the relevant authority. Bear in mind its validity period: it expires, so it is best to do it when you are about to submit your application.

Can I also renew my driving licence at the same time?

Yes, it can be dealt with in the same visit, as can a firearms licence. Mention it when booking so that enough time is set aside and so you bring the paperwork for both procedures.

What is the nautical medical certificate?

It is the report of physical and mental fitness required by the authorities in order to obtain or renew recreational boating licences. It checks vision —with particular attention to colour vision because of buoyage—, hearing, the musculoskeletal system, neurological status and psychotechnical tests.

Which medical certificate is needed to work on board ships?

The professional seafarer's certificate is different from the recreational one and it is issued by the Instituto Social de la Marina or by centres authorised to do so, under their own criteria. Our examination centre issues those for recreational boating and hunting licences; for the professional one, you will be told where to go.
