Official medical certificate
Official medical certificate for public-sector exams, sports federations, grants and paperwork: check-up and official form signed in the same visit.
What it is
The official medical certificate is a legally valid document, issued on the official form of the General Council of Medical Colleges, in which a registered doctor records your state of health after examining you. It can't be issued without an in-person visit or «over the phone».
What it's usually needed for
- Public-sector exams and selection processes.
- Federation licences and sports activities.
- Grants, school trips and academic paperwork.
- Adoptions, insurance and administrative procedures.
- Food handling and various job requirements.
What the visit involves
Brief. The doctor reviews your history and medication, carries out whatever examination applies — blood pressure, a general check-up and whatever the certificate's purpose requires — and fills in, signs and stamps the form. Bring your valid ID, your glasses if you use them and, if the requesting body has given you their own form, that document.
What it doesn't cover
The official medical certificate doesn't replace the formal fitness check-ups required for renewing your driving licence, for a firearms licence or for psychotechnical tests for private security and machinery — these need specific tests carried out at the medical certificate centre. If you're not sure which one you've been asked for, bring the letter from the requesting body and it'll be checked before starting.
Frequently asked questions
Can the certificate be issued without me coming to the clinic?
No. The official medical certificate attests to your state of health following an examination, so it requires an in-person consultation. It is done in a single visit: the doctor reviews your history, carries out the relevant examination and then completes, signs and stamps the official form.
What do I need to bring?
A valid ID document, glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, any reports and current medication that might be relevant, and the specific form if the body requesting it has given you one. With that, it is resolved in the same visit.
Is it valid for renewing a driving licence?
No. For driving, for a firearms licence or for a psychotechnical assessment, regulated psychophysical examinations with specific tests are required, and these are carried out at the medical examination centre. If you are not sure which one you are being asked for, bring the letter from the authority and it will be checked beforehand.
How do you obtain an official medical certificate?
By booking an appointment with a registered doctor and attending in person: the examination is carried out and the official form is completed, signed and stamped during the same visit. Bring a valid ID document, your glasses if you wear them, reports on any current treatment and the specific form if the authority has given you one.
What is an official medical certificate?
It is a legally valid document, issued on the official form of the Consejo General de Colegios de Médicos, in which a registered doctor records your state of health after examining you. It is not the same as a medical report, and it does not replace the statutory physical and mental fitness assessments.
Where can you get an official medical certificate?
At any practice with a registered doctor who has the official form: the examination is carried out and it is signed and stamped during the same visit. It is not issued by pharmacies nor downloaded from the internet, and an ordinary medical report will not do if the body concerned specifically asks for the official certificate.
