Firearms licence

Firearms licence

Physical and mental fitness examination and certificate for a firearms licence: vision, hearing and psychotechnical tests as required by regulations.

What it's needed for

What's checked

  • Visual ability: acuity, field of vision and colour vision.
  • Hearing ability.
  • Musculoskeletal system: the strength, mobility and coordination needed to handle the weapon.
  • Neurological status and a psychological assessment.
  • Psychotechnical tests: attention, coordination and reaction time.
  • Medical history: treatments, background and substance use.

What to bring

Valid ID, glasses or contact lenses if you use them, a hearing aid if you wear one, and medical reports for any relevant condition or ongoing treatment. If it's a renewal, bring your previous licence.

After the examination

With a favourable result, the fitness reportis issued, which is submitted along with the rest of the paperwork to the Civil Guard's Weapons Office. The report is valid for a limited time from when it's issued, so it's best done close to when you'll submit your application, not too far in advance. The same centre also carries out check-ups for driving licences and for hunting and boating.
