Official medical certificate

Official medical certificate

What the official medical certificate confirms and what it's needed for: exams, sports licences, grants, adoptions and paperwork. Issued at the clinic.

What it's needed for

The official medical certificate confirms your state of health at the time of the check-up. It's required, among other things, for:

  • Public-sector exams and selection processes.
  • Sports federations and licences.
  • Academic paperwork, grants and school trips.
  • Adoptions, insurance and certain administrative procedures.
  • Food handling and other job requirements.

How to get one

With an in-person medical consultation: it isn't issued remotely or without an examination. The doctor reviews your history, your medication and carries out the relevant examination; they then fill in the official form from the General Council of Medical Colleges, sign it and stamp it. It's a legally valid document.

What to bring

  • Valid ID.
  • Glasses or contact lenses if you use them.
  • Any reports or current treatments that might be relevant.
  • If the body requesting it has given you a specific form, bring it.

What it isn't

The official medical certificate doesn't replace the physical and mental fitness check-up required for driving or holding firearms: those are done at an authorised centre and involve specific tests. If what you need is to renew your driving licence, a firearms licence or a psychotechnical test, that's the medical certificates clinic that applies.

Frequently asked questions

Can the certificate be issued without me coming to the clinic?

No. The official medical certificate attests to your state of health following an examination, so it requires an in-person consultation. It is done in a single visit: the doctor reviews your history, carries out the relevant examination and then completes, signs and stamps the official form.

What do I need to bring?

A valid ID document, glasses or contact lenses if you wear them, any reports and current medication that might be relevant, and the specific form if the body requesting it has given you one. With that, it is resolved in the same visit.

Is it valid for renewing a driving licence?

No. For driving, for a firearms licence or for a psychotechnical assessment, regulated psychophysical examinations with specific tests are required, and these are carried out at the medical examination centre. If you are not sure which one you are being asked for, bring the letter from the authority and it will be checked beforehand.

How do you obtain an official medical certificate?

By booking an appointment with a registered doctor and attending in person: the examination is carried out and the official form is completed, signed and stamped during the same visit. Bring a valid ID document, your glasses if you wear them, reports on any current treatment and the specific form if the authority has given you one.

What is an official medical certificate?

It is a legally valid document, issued on the official form of the Consejo General de Colegios de Médicos, in which a registered doctor records your state of health after examining you. It is not the same as a medical report, and it does not replace the statutory physical and mental fitness assessments.

Where can you get an official medical certificate?

At any practice with a registered doctor who has the official form: the examination is carried out and it is signed and stamped during the same visit. It is not issued by pharmacies nor downloaded from the internet, and an ordinary medical report will not do if the body concerned specifically asks for the official certificate.
