What is a dental implant and when is it fitted?

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. What exactly it is, when it's indicated, and what role the crown and the bone that holds it play.

In general, implants — a kind of screw placed in the jawbone that the "new" tooth rests on — are fitted when a tooth is missing (due to disease or trauma) or when a natural tooth has to be removed (due to extensive damage from decay) and needs to be replaced with an artificial one.

But not everyone can have them fitted. So if you are missing a tooth or have some kind of oral condition that puts your teeth at risk, put yourself in the hands of a trusted dentist for proper advice.

This specialist must first assess the state of your gum, because enough bone mass is needed for the implant to be firmly fixed. If that is not the case, additional intermediate steps will be needed before fitting these pieces, or other options will need to be considered.
