Professional dental cleaning: what it includes and why you should get one

Ultrasound, air polishing and fluoride treatment: what a professional dental cleaning includes, how long it takes and why it is the best prevention against periodontitis.

Good oral health starts with prevention. At ClĂnicas RincĂłn Dental we provide professional dental cleanings to remove tartar, reduce the build-up of bacterial plaque and protect the health of your teeth and gums.

Since 1972 we have combined experience, close attention and advanced technology to offer thorough, safe oral hygiene tailored to the needs of each patient.

Why choose ClĂnicas RincĂłn Dental?

A professional dental cleaning does not consist solely of removing visible stains. Before starting, our team assesses the general condition of the mouth to detect possible signs of inflammation, tartar build-up or periodontal disease.

At our dental clinics you will find:

  • Professionals experienced in prevention and periodontal health.
  • A personalised assessment of teeth and gums.
  • Specialised technology to remove plaque, tartar and stains.
  • Techniques adapted for patients with dental sensitivity.
  • Close, family-style care backed by more than 50 years of experience.

Our goal is to look after your smile and help you prevent problems that could require more complex treatments in the future.

How is a professional dental cleaning performed?

The procedure may vary depending on the condition of the mouth, but it usually includes the following stages:

Initial assessment of teeth and gums

Before carrying out the cleaning, we examine the mouth to locate the areas with the greatest build-up of plaque and tartar. We also check for signs of gingivitis, bleeding or sensitivity.

This assessment allows us to tailor the treatment to the real needs of each patient.

Removal of plaque and tartar

Using specific instruments and ultrasound equipment, we remove the deposits built up around the teeth and in areas that are hard to reach with a toothbrush.

Removing tartar helps reduce gum inflammation and prevent the onset or progression of periodontal disease.

Removal of surface stains

When indicated, we use an air-polishing system to reduce external stains caused by coffee, tea, tobacco and certain foods.

This procedure does not whiten the teeth, but it does restore their natural appearance by removing surface pigmentation.

Dental polishing and personalised recommendations

Finally, we polish the surface of the teeth with a specific paste. This gives a smoother surface and temporarily makes it harder for new bacterial plaque to build up.

Depending on the case, we can also apply fluoride and offer recommendations on brushing, interdental hygiene and gum care.

Benefits of having a dental cleaning

Although daily brushing and interdental cleaning are essential, they do not always remove all the accumulated plaque. Once it hardens and turns into tartar, it must be removed by a professional.

Having regular dental cleanings can help you:

  • Prevent gingivitis and other gum diseases.
  • Reduce the build-up of bacterial plaque and tartar.
  • Improve the appearance of your teeth by removing external stains.
  • Fight some of the causes of bad breath.
  • Detect possible oral health problems early.
  • Maintain the results of other dental treatments for longer.
  • Enjoy a feeling of cleanliness and freshness.

Dental cleaning and prevention of periodontitis

Tartar can irritate the gums and cause inflammation, redness or bleeding. If this situation is not controlled, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, popularly known as pyorrhoea.

Periodontitis affects the tissues that support the teeth and, in advanced stages, can cause tooth mobility and even tooth loss. Regular check-ups and professional cleanings are essential to prevent it or detect it early.

If periodontal disease is already present, a conventional cleaning may not be enough. In that case, our professionals will assess whether you need a specific periodontal treatment.

How often should you get a dental cleaning?

As a general guideline, many people have a professional cleaning every 6 to 12 months. However, the right frequency depends on factors such as:

  • How easily you build up tartar.
  • The condition of your gums.
  • Your daily oral hygiene.
  • Tobacco use.
  • The presence of implants, dentures or orthodontics.
  • A history of periodontal disease.

After examining your mouth, our team will tell you how often you should have a dental cleaning.

Does dental cleaning damage the enamel?

No. When performed by a professional with the right instruments and technique, cleaning removes the deposits attached to the tooth without wearing down the enamel.

After treatment, mild temporary sensitivity may appear, especially when there is a lot of tartar build-up or the gums are inflamed. This sensation usually decreases within a short time.

Does having a dental cleaning hurt?

In general, it is a well-tolerated procedure. Some people may feel slight discomfort if they have dental sensitivity, gum inflammation or a significant amount of tartar.

At ClĂnicas RincĂłn Dental we adapt the technique and intensity of the treatment to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

How long does a dental cleaning take?

The duration depends on the condition of the mouth and the amount of tartar built up. A professional cleaning is usually completed in a single appointment of 40 to 50 minutes.

If we detect signs of periodontal disease or tartar deposits under the gums, additional tests may be needed or a specific treatment may need to be planned.
